ABOUT THE ARTIST
Darryl Babatunde Smith makes works similarly to the act of writing poetry. He draws from ancient sculptures, descriptions of ancient painting, and hymns to gods; such as Dionysian and Bacchic myths. Babatunde Smith studied French, German, and Latin in school before embarking on a journey of studying Ancient Greek. He earned a BFA in Painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and an MFA in Drawing from the New York Academy of Art. He immerses himself in antiquity while using classical symbols and Renaissance techniques, like silverpoint, to connect personal narratives with ancient ideologies.
